A woman receiving funding from Australia’s new National Disability Insurance Scheme successfully sued in court to have her sex therapy covered.
Now the conversation has turned to whether the program could potentially fund hiring sex workers, and there has been considerable community push-back against this idea. Amidst all the uproar, one fact that has rarely been discussed is that some couples on NDIS with mobility limitations hire a sex worker in order to have sex with one another – not with the sex worker.
When people need assistance to get into position to have sex with one another, it’s rare that a professional caregiver will be willing or able to provide it. A sex worker can provide this service. Making a blanket rule preventing people from using NDIS funds to hire sex workers will make it financially impossible for some couples to ever have sex with one another.
